Hi, I was wondering how I can get Videophile to handle AVI files. I'm using version 1.3.0 and it won't show any thumbnails for this file type and when I try to create a poster image I get the message that "Videophile II cannot capture frames from this movie".

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have combined community codec pack installed and that my system directory is F:\. I just checked and Videophile has the same problems with my MP4 files. I'm guessing that these problems are somehow related to Videophile not being able to find or load ffdshow.

I love the concept behind Videophile II by the way. It might be a little rough around the edges right now but I think with enough effort it can become the best tool for organising and managing video collections.

Hi Ironsmith,

Thanks for the encouraging words. VP2 will improve over time (next Beta is out soon and has some big improvements). If you have any suggestions or features you'd like to see then please feel free to post them in 'Feature Requests'

Now to your problem...

This can happen when you have DirectVobSub installed on your system (a prog for managing subtitles).

Locate the file vsfilter.dll on your system

and then type the following at the Run prompt (Start Menu | Run):

rundll32 "C:\YOUR PATH\vsfilter.dll", DirectVobSub

The config box for DirectVoSub should pop-up and, if you go to the General tab, change the 'loading' setting to 'Do not load'. Do not worry, ffdshow can also handle subtitles if needed so you won't lose functionality...

Then see if the problem persists. Good luck...

Hi again,

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried your suggestion, but unfortunately I keep getting the same problem. I also uninstalled vobsub but that didn't change anything either.

Interesting. I'll need to see what happens on your system when the file is opened outside of Videophile II. Specifically, what happens when you try to open the file in GraphEdit?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... layLang=en

If you could capture the screen and post here (or email it to me videophile.ii@gmail.com if the board won't let you post here) it would be very helpful....

Actually, can I have the video as well. That is one hell of a fight!!

Aah, of course. The dreaded DIVX decoder!! VP2 doesn't play nicely with that. And as far as I'm aware, it isn't alone. I tried for ages to get it working well with VP2 but to no avail. Then I discovered that many other apps that require 'frame grabbing' also struggle with that particular codec.

The only solution I have for that is to either unistall it and allow ffdshow to handle your divx files (which it is more than capable of doing) or changing the merit of the DIVX decoder so that ffdshow is preferred over it....

Let me know if you need help with the latter ooption, if that is your preference....

That fixed it, thanks a lot. I just uninstalled divx as you advised and reinstalled cccp. I don't really have any use for the divx codec now anyway, so there's no problem in getting rid of it.

Ah, I forgot that you're a boxing fan too. A significant number of the boxing videos that I have are Pacquiao fights which I found searching on Mininova, including the second fight with Barrera from that screenshot. With all the HBO 24/7 episodes as well, I think I'll be making good using of a 'Pacquiao' tag in VP2.

Cool. Maybe one day I can get to see your Library? I have only a small Boxing Library at the moment with Tag Categories for:

- Fighter
- Format (contains tags like 12x3, 4x3 etc)
- Nationality (Usually linked to from the Fighters category)
- Sanctioning Body (to contain the alphabet-soup LOL. WBC, IBF etc)
- Weight Division

Anyway, mate, enjoy playing with the program...

Ooo, one more thing. You were one of the first people to register here (back in April) and yet it took 3+ months to find out that you couldn't grab thumbnails. What gives?

I wouldn't say I've got a huge boxing library. It's basically 90% Pacquiao and a few other good fights here and there. I never got round to recording any older fights, but thankfully they're all pretty much on the internet now. The older fights are usually lower in quality though but that doesn't bother me too much.

I was wondering if you were going to ask about the 3 months delay. Only simple answer to that is laziness and probably a few other distractions. I messed around with it back then after installation and didn't manage to get it working. I guess I kind of forgot to follow it up at that point and well, here I am 3 months later. As you can guess, I'm frequently accused of procrastination.

Hmm, procrastination. Another thing we have in common... ;-)
