By way of additional info, inside the Library is a table called StorageDevices. Each is uniquely identified via tha DSN (where available) or the content of the identifer file that is written to the device in its absence. Associated with these rows are the physical location and the logical location of the device, things which can change in the event of drive re-mappings or even nested creations of UNC paths or Symbolic Links.

Create a brand new Library file on one PC. Then add files to that Library that are located on the network share. VH will try to get the DSN from the share (and be refused) and will then ask if it can mark the device with a file for subesquent identification purposes....

Just had a quick look at the code. You may see this (in a proper MsgBox, of course!):

sMsg = "This device has no serial number. As such, Vee-Hive" & vbCrLf & _
"will not be able to identify it in the future." & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & _
"This can be resolved if you allow Vee-Hive to write a" & vbCrLf & _
"very small file to this device for identification purposes." & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & _
"Proceed?"

and if that didn't work, this:

sMsg = "Failed to mark the Storage Device mapped to " & DeviceToTag.LogicalPath & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & _
"Vee-Hive could not establish any reliable method of identifying" & vbCrLf & _
"or marking this storage device and, therefore, will not permit files " & vbCrLf & _
"from this device to be added to this Library" & vbCrLf & vbCrLf

or other related (but less significant) messages...
